Chlld Welfare: Policy/Strengt
Child Welfare: Policy and Strengths-Based Approaches brings together perspectives from law and public policy and examines current Canadian practices in areas of child poverty, protection from abuse and neglect and childcare. The course provides an overview of the historical and contemporary practices within the child welfare system, as well as an introduction to Nova Scotia child welfare laws and policies. Special focus will be placed on culturally appropriate practice models within Indigenous communities. Students will explore how social issues such as poverty, homelessness, family violence, addiction, mental health challenges, and exposure to trauma can impact the family and developing child. Students will be exposed to a practice model that is child focused, family centered, and strengths based - using a firm, fair, and friendly approach to practice. Particular emphasis will be placed on critical self-reflection regarding opposing core values and moral/ethical dilemmas within the child welfare setting.
