Social Justice & Advocacy

Lec 67 selected

Social Justice and Advocacy explores concepts of social justice from historical, theoretical, and practice-based perspectives. Particular emphasis is placed on the ways in which concepts of social justice intersect with students' own value systems, standards and practices of the social work profession, and the practice of social work among diverse individuals and communities in marginalized settings. Building upon this foundation, the second half of the course will develop strategies and practices of advocacy - for cases, causes, and communities. Students will engage with advocacy through a range of lenses, including; systems theory, strengths perspectives, ecological frameworks, empowerment approaches, and social entrepreneurship. Students will also come to understand the value of collaborative relationships with community service organizations and other healthcare and helping professionals.
