CHEM 2402
Organic Chemistry II
Lec 01 and Lab B01 selected
Building on CHEM2401 the properties and reactions of alcohols, ethers, amines, nitriles, carbonyls and aromatic compounds are examined. The reactions are used in synthetic sequences, and reaction mechanisms are stressed. Spectroscopic methods (MS, IR, 1H and 13C NMR) are introduced and used to determine the structures of organic compounds.

Course rules
- Missed midterms
- There are no make-up midterms; a missed midterm's weight is added to the final examination.
- Missed final
- A documented, justifiable reason and timely contact with the instructor are required to arrange the single make-up final.
- Final exam
- A mark below 35% results in an automatic course failure; at least 40% is needed for a grade above D.
- Laboratory
- Laboratory attendance is mandatory, and at least 7.5/15 in the lab is required to pass.
- Assignments
- Assignments must be handwritten and submitted on paper by the due date; online and late submissions are not accepted.
- Academic integrity
- All graded work must be completed independently; unauthorized non-independent work receives zero.
- Lab safety
- Approved safety glasses and a long-sleeved, 100% cotton lab coat are required in the laboratory.
