CHEM 3201
Analyt Spectro & Separation
Lec 01 and Lab B01 selected
The most commonly employed instrumental techniques in chemical analysis use spectroscopy in some form or involve separations. Qualitative and quantitative analysis and the instrumentation involved are discussed in some detail for mass spectrometry. Methods of separation including solvent extraction and the various types of chromatography are presented. Laboratory experiments illustrate the above techniques with practical examples.

Course rules
- Missed tests
- Submit a student declaration of absence form and contact the instructor; make-ups or grade transfers are at the instructor’s discretion.
- Missed labs
- The first missed lab needs no documentation; later missed labs require a declaration and a makeup request to the lab instructor.
- Late reports
- Each group may use one one-week extension; after that, reports incur a 15% penalty for up to one week, then are no longer accepted.
- Lab reports
- Submit reports as a group in PDF format through Brightspace.
- Academic integrity
- AI and online resources may help with practice problems but cannot be used for lab reports or pre-lab questions.
- Safety
- Complete WHMIS and Laboratory Safety training and wear approved safety glasses and a knee-length lab coat.
- Electronics
- Turn off cell phones during lectures and labs.
