Inclusive Computing
This course explores aspects of Inclusion in designing & developing computing applications, considering inclusion in the broad sense to encompass equity, diversity, inclusion, accessibility, and decolonization. We explore the complexities associated with considering inclusion in the broad sense, as we work towards a common understanding of inclusive computing and empathy-oriented design. The course includes three main modules: (i) Foundations of inclusion and computing. (ii) Inclusive UI/UX design, covering empathy-oriented and accessible, wellness-focused designs, and culturally respectful experiences. (iii) Considerations for developing inclusive systems and applications, exploring inclusive system development, emphasizing Two-Eyed Seeing principles, inclusive data management, and community-focused security. Students will employ critical thinking and evaluate several current popular web/mobile applications with an inclusive lens, collaboratively develop heuristic guidelines for inclusive design and development, and envision/design/develop your own computing applications using the guidelines developed by the class.
