Comprehensive Examination

Lec 01 selected

The Comprehensive Examination primarily serves as a means to ensure that students have the necessary foundational knowledge to do a dissertation. Specifically, the examination seeks to assess whether students have general knowledge about the field of management, research methodologies, and their specific research area. The Examination also serves as a preparation for the dissertation by facilitating the development of a conceptual base for research in the student’s area of study and ensuring that the student’s knowledge is sufficiently broad and conceptually structured to provide a solid basis for research in the field. Comprehensive exams are normally completed by the end of the second year of full-time study, or at the beginning of the third year at the latest, and only after completion of all required class work and prior to the thesis proposal. The standard approach consists of two components i.e. two papers or a paper and oral exam. An alternate format of examination is possible through discussion with and approval by the supervisor and committee. Students are enrolled in the Program and the Comprehensive Examination for each term that it is taken.
