SLWK 3000
Commun Organizing & Advocacy
This course introduces students to the praxis of community organizing. It provides foundational knowledge of the skills, strategies, and tactics needed to facilitate community building and social change. It explores models of working with rather than on communities. Students will become familiar with thinking about community organizing from the margins by using practices developed to challenge social inequalities, and to work with the inherent capacities of marginalized populations, especially those advanced by grassroots groups. The course draws on interdisciplinary insights from various fields in examining the dynamics of race, class, migration, nationality, community healing, and their intersections in the context of community organizing.
