This course helps students develop university-level communication and composition skills, along with study skills to facilitate the transition to university. Topics include understanding the writing process, reading critically, creating thesis statements, structuring, drafting and revising essays, and using varied modes of exposition. Through class discussions, selected readings and several written assignments, students will develop awareness of what constitutes effective academic writing. More broadly, the course will help students improve their general study skills and understand academic expectations and conventions. It covers many transferable skills that will enable students to achieve success in university and in their future careers. Topics include time management, information input and output strategies, research skills, and collaborative learning.
