AI and Its Discontents
This course investigates artificial intelligence (AI) through the lenses of critical theory and political economy. Students examine the power dynamics, economic interests, and ideological frameworks that shape its design, deployment, and consequences. Students analyze how algorithmic systems influence labour, governance, surveillance, and environmental conditions, as well as the debates and forms of resistance that arise in response. The course critically evaluates dominant ethical and industry narratives, emphasizing how they can obscure structural questions about power and accountability. Through critical reading, discussion, and research-based writing, students develop the ability to interpret and communicate the broader implications of AI for public life.
