ENGG 3670
Soil Mech & Site Character
This course focuses on the mechanics of soil materials applied to geotechnical engineering problems. It covers soil classification and the physical and chemical properties of soil that relate to its strength. It examines interactive forces in soil water systems and the role of groundwater in geotechnical engineering problems. Topics studied include: effective stress, consolidation, shear strength and lateral earth pressure. Theory is applied to geotechnical problems such as settlement and stability of earth slopes. Students will gain an understanding of approaches to site investigation and will perform testing in the field and laboratory to characterize soil properties. Students will have an opportunity to use software tools that support problem analysis and design. [Restriction(s): Non-BENG students may take a maximum of 4.00 ENGG credits.][Department(s): Department of Civil, Environmental, and Water Resources Engineering]
