Minds and Machines: Navigating the Ethics, Applications, and Impacts of Generative AI
This course explores the new world of generative artificial intelligence (GAI) and its relationship to the thing it is trying to simulate: human cognition. Students learn about the similarities and differences between human cognition and GAI, the potential uses of GAI, some of the possible consequences of GAI, and questions that GAI users need to be asking themselves. The course covers application, including writing prompts and the process of iterative prompting, use cases, privacy and confidentiality. The course actively engages in the ongoing process of academic integrity and considers some of the ethical and moral implications of a society that uses GAI. Students learn through hands-on practical use of different GAI platforms, peer discussion and debate, and the development of contemporary resources for GAI users.
