CRIM 3800
Service Learning in Criminology and Justice
Students will volunteer for 100 hours at a non-profit social service agency or other community group that is mandated to address issues related to criminology and/or social justice. Students should endeavour to volunteer with an agency or group that supports vulnerable, marginalized, and underserved populations. They will integrate criminological theory, concepts, and methods with their own direct experience of working in a community agency. Students will engage their classmates during classroom time and/or as part of course assessments to share experiences, self-reflections, and insights about their volunteer work. They will reflect on, and analyze, the connections and disconnections between 'academic' and other sources of knowledge at play at the experiential community level. Note: This is a seminar course combined with service learning. Note: The volunteer placement will be established in advance in consultation with the instructor. Students are strongly encouraged to begin their volunteer work in advance of the start date of the course.
