Students will survey the evolution of Western popular music from the early 20th century to the present, with a particular focus on Black popular musics and other genres influenced by the African diaspora. They will examine the social, cultural, and political factors that influenced these musics’ creation and development, and will consider how musical characteristics, instruments, lyrics, and technology are featured in specific genres. Note: This is a Pathway Level 3 course option.
