ECOL 2201
Plant Survey and Classification
(3 Credits) 3 Lecture hours, 3 Laboratory hours Fosters active learning in plant survey principles, classification, and identification across Alberta’s diverse terrestrial ecosystems. Students examine the functional traits that define major plant families and apply ecosite classification frameworks to environmental assessment and the reclamation of disturbed sites. Through inquiry-based laboratory activities, learners use taxonomic keys and field guides to identify major plant functional types, apply indicator-species concepts to interpret site conditions, and evaluate ecosystem functions. By integrating Indigenous plant-use mitigation strategies, rangeland and wetland assessment, rare-plant stewardship, and vegetation evidence for reclamation certification, learners are equipped with intermediate-level vegetation assessment skills. Section information text: Labs will begin the 2nd week of the semester unless otherwise specified.
