This course explores the context for the New Evangelization in the Roman Catholic church. It looks at the responses by the Church to secular modernity in the West in the 19th and 20th centuries. It investigates the massive decline of the Catholic faith in the West after 1970 and examines various responses to this crisis during the pontificates of John Paul II, Benedict, and Francis.
