Child Development and Teaching
This introductory course presents an overview of child development as it relates to K-12 teaching. Theoretical frameworks related to differences in cognitive, linguistic, social, cultural, emotional, and physical development of children and Indigenous views of child development are explored. Teacher candidates learn about trauma-informed approaches to teaching and learning, and the impact of trauma on a child's physical, emotional, and cognitive well-being. Teacher candidates design developmentally appropriate learning experiences that demonstrate an application of course content. Teacher candidates develop their skills as reflective practitioners by examining their own teaching practice and developing future practice based on the relevant psychology and research covered in the course.
