Bromance

Lec 01 selected

What does the rise of the word "bromance" in popular culture reveal about the shifting and often contradictory realities of gender in the twenty first century? Does it name enduring patriarchal solidarities, or does it point toward new ways of imagining male friendship, intimacy, and masculinity? From patriarchal solidarity and settler colonial nation building to contemporary media representations of male friendship, students will examine how bonds between men have shaped social institutions, economies, and political life. This course will ask how these bonds might instead be reimagined toward care, accountability, and justice.
