HIST 4550
War, Revolution 20th c. World
This course explores the history of wars and revolutions from the turn of the twentieth century to the present. In so doing, it examines the history of various forms of imperialism and colonisation, as well as efforts to resist imperial domination and the struggles to forge new political structures in the aftermath of decolonisation. It reviews the evolution of nationalist movements, the effects of a range of political ideologies, and the relationships between economic factors and the waging of war. This course provides both a "light" survey history of the major wars of the twentieth century as well as some thematic exploration of specific conflicts. Central to the structure of the course is an exploration of various modes of communication about war. Cross-listed with DSJS 4550 Seminar: Three hours a week. Restriction: Student must have third year standing or above, or permission of the instructor.
