History of Mus in Pop Culture

This course explores music in popular culture in the 19th and 20th centuries, from minstrel music, musical theatre, blues, jazz, and folk, to film music, and a selection of rock and pop genres. Its approach includes analysis of musical and social meanings in racialized, gendered, and ethnic contexts against the practices of consumption, reception, and the 'star' system.
