African Music: Roots & Routes

Lec A selected

This introductory course surveys music of the African diaspora that was formed because of the transatlantic slave trade. Students will explore selected Afrodiasporic music repertoires of the Caribbean and the Americas to gain an appreciation of how these musical genres emerged and ways in which they represent diasporic identities, connect to the dual nature of homeland, and preserve collective memories. This exploration will include traditional and popular genres such as spirituals, kumina, gospel, blues, R&B, soul, hip hop, soca, calypso, dancehall, reggae, ska, mizik rasin, merengue, salsa, reggaeton, bomba, and son. Cross-listed with MUMI204. <br>
