China & Global Res Governance
This course examines the different dimensions of global resource governance, with attention to China’s involvement and influence on it. China has risen as a global economic powerhouse, and the European, Asian, African, and American countries are maintaining economic and strategic ties to secure their national and regional interests. China has adopted various policies that affect, influence, and even determine global governance and resource management practices. Its economic rise has ushered a new momentum in global resource governance and exposed gaps in existing governance strategies adopted to manage natural resources. It has thus become important to understand the Chinese perspectives, policies, and practices regarding resource management. Based on this imperative, this course will examine China’s rise in global governance; explore policies adopted by China to acquire natural resources abroad; identify key actors and drivers that shape China’s resource policies at home and abroad and recognize the deficiencies in global resource governance.
