Nationalism and Belonging

Lec A selected

In this seminar, we discuss nationalism and its ongoing effects on the world today. We begin by examining the relationship between nationalism and modernity, as well as between state sovereignty and the right to national self-determination. Then, we explore the limits of tolerance and the challenges of multicultural integration posed by the rise of majoritarian nationalism. We also investigate the impact of immigration on national identity and how state-supported memorialization policies affect people's perception of themselves. Finally, we discuss whether globalization will diminish nation-states and nationalism. During the seminar, students will analyze case studies from various parts of the world, exploring how different nations and states deal with social change and conflicts arising from cultural, religious, and ethnic differences.
