An examination of the nature, value, and role of sport in society. We attempt to define sport and discuss the relation between sports and games. We distinguish between sports which are games and sports which are not. The notions of athletic excellence, competition, cheating, sportsmanship, gamesmanship and athletic integrity will be discussed. This will include issues such as “doping” in sports and the influence of commercial broadcasting on professional sports. We will also look at the increasing role of technology in sport (e.g. VAR) and ask the question of where cyber sports fit into the broader world of sport.
