This course examines Canadian Youth Culture as it is shaped by the CBC’s nation building project, “Canada Reads.” Throughout the semester, we will interrogate the Canada Reads project, with the goal of determining both its value and its shortcomings. Within that framework, we will read, assess, and discuss the eight novels featured on Canada Reads that circulate as YA literature. Our category of YA literature itself will be challenged: some of these texts are published under the category “YA,” while others are determined to be YA by institutions such as schools and libraries.
