This course explores teaching an integrated and culturally responsive elementary ELA curriculum. Students will come to understand literacy is a multifaceted and complex concept that extends beyond reading and writing to multiple literacies (media, critical, visual, and information. Students will begin their exploration of curriculum documents, including the principles of learning, students' competencies, outcomes and performance/assessment indicators. Topics for the course will include early literacy, phonological awareness, reading instruction, the process of writing, ongoing assessment and new media. Students will also plan and deliver literacy lessons.
