Theory and analysis of popular music. Defined broadly, popular music to be studied in this course includes pop, rock, disco, punk, metal, folk, and selected musical theater repertoire. Topics include phrase structure, song forms, harmonic syntax, loops and harmonic schemata, tonicization and modulation, and rhythmic and hypermetric analysis in popular music. This course will culminate in a final composition or analysis project. <br>
